Calabria

In the south of the peninsula lies Calabria the toe of the “boot”. This region is between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Sea and is separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina. Calabria is a unique place to visit both in summer and winter. It is so unique due to its picturesque places accompanied by a welcoming atmosphere, a landscape enriched by the beautiful colors of the sea from the coast made of rock and sand and its mysterious and wild nature. Relaxation is guaranteed by the presence of the beauty of nature and its pure and unspoiled landscape, where vast expanses of green are interrupted by blue lakes and waterfalls, great for a nap or a walk outdoors, but for those who love warm and suntan here you can stay under the warm rays of the sun close to a crystal clear sea. This region has secular traditions with areas full of the monuments and places that bear his glorious past dominated by the presence of Greek settlements, of which it was the cradle. The provinces are: Catanzaro (capital), Reggio Calabria, Cosenza, Crotone and Vibo Valentia.

THINGS TO SEE

There are many works of art in the foreground as the Bronze Statues, exhibited in the National Museum of Reggio Calabria, exhibiting by the presence of Ancient Greece in its ancient past. These beautiful statues, representing two warrior heroes, are a rare example of classical Greek sculpture. Among its 800km of beaches, Calabria offers many choices. Capo Vaticano, in the province of Vibo Valentia, is defined one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world: a long stretch of fine sand, surrounded by olive trees and lapped by crystal clear waters populated by a huge variety of fish fauna. Some of the most interesting places to visit are the parks of Sila, Serre, Aspromonte and Pollino. The “rivers” and “big stones” of Aspromonte, the “vegetable patriarchs” of Sila, the rich fauna of Serre are just some of the wonders of nature that this land offers.

Here the crystalline waters of the sea are also a “natural gym” where you can have fun practicing windsurfing, kite surfing or scuba diving to explore the beautiful grounds, homes of colorful sea fish and fascinating wrecks of the Second World War, Calabria is one of the most desirable places to rest under an umbrella in the sun. Among the opportunities and entertainment offered in inland areas there are the National Parks that offer these unforgettable experiences among the flora and fauna of Calabria. Winter sports offered by this region are various, due to the wide range of equipped ski resorts located in this area. You can also do rafting along the Lao river or you can simply walk down the same river. These are some of the opportunities, just to mention. Moreover specialized guides will follow you and explain everything so these activities become accessible to all and very funny to do. A novelty that offers the mountainous area of ​​Calabria is orienteering, a Scandinavian sport which aim is to measure the orientation of those who want to try, in fact it is only equipped with maps and compass in order to reach a goal in the shortest time possible, but be careful, it’s not that simple indeed there are some milestones difficult to find. For extremists there is the possibility of flying over breathtaking views with parapente, showing this enchanting region from a different perspective.

What to taste

This is the land of strong flavors and is a symbol for Italy with its Calabrian chili. You can easily find this ingredient in many Calabrian typical dishes: from toasted bread with n’duja or with sardella – also called the “caviar of the poor” – to pork sausages, from pasta sauces to fish dishes. Another taste which is largely used and very popular is red onion, protected by the PGI, used to flavor dishes and for medicinal purposes.
